CCS Hosts Delegation of Russian Women Researching STEM Education

Community Colleges of Spokane welcomes five visiting Russian women to Spokane this weekend as they spend a week learning about STEM (science, technology, engineering, mathematics) education and careers March 4-12.

Their focus is learning about ways in which our community promotes women in STEM, both in the workplace and in education.

All of the women work in STEM fields in Russia and were selected to take part in this Open World Leadership Center, a bipartisan congressionally funded exchange and outreach program established in 1999. It conducts exchanges that establish lasting professional relationships between the up-and-coming leaders of Open World countries and Americans dedicated to showcasing U.S. values and democratic institutions.

Last year CCS hosted a delegation from Eurasia which came to Spokane to learn about economic development and government accountability. “We welcome opportunities to share information with and learn from our global partners,” said Christine Johnson, CCS Chancellor. “We are honored to host our Russian guests and share our STEM leadership as a region, and the best of our community with them.”

During their one-week stay, the delegation will participate in interactive sessions with local experts at both Spokane Falls and Spokane Community Colleges, as well as Eastern Washington University, Washington State University, Spokane Public Schools, Educational School District 101, Greater Spokane Incorporated, Startup Spokane and local elected officials.

In addition to the STEM focus of their visit, they also will tour the historic Davenport Hotel, Riverfront Park, the Fox Theater and the Bing Crosby House Museum.
