Spokane Colleges today announced Spokane Falls Community College is accepting applications from June 15 through Oct. 20, 2026 for its third sƛ̓x̣etkʷ Artist-in-Residence Program, which supports emerging Native American artists while fostering cultural exchange and community engagement.
The winter 2027 residency runs from Jan. 5 through March 26, 2027, and includes a monthly stipend, furnished housing, fine art department studio space in SFCC's sƛ̓x̣etkʷ Fine and Applied Arts Building, travel reimbursement and opportunities to work with students and the community.
"The sƛ̓x̣etkʷ Artist-in-Residence Program provides Native artists with time and space to develop their work while sharing their creative practices and cultural knowledge with our campus," said Cozette Phillips, SFCC Fine Art Gallery director and program director.
Since launching in 2025, the residency has welcomed two artists whose work has enriched the college and the Spokane community. Inaugural resident kʷaɁowišč tyee (Inanna McCarty) explored Indigenous identity and cultural continuity through printmaking, digital illustration, and metalsmithing, culminating in the exhibition A Promise to the Generations. The second resident, Claire Rae Edmo of the Shoshone-Bannock Tribes, created new work inspired by Indigenous histories, language and place while engaging students through artist talks and demonstrations.
The residency is open to emerging Native American visual artists who are enrolled members of federally recognized Tribes, with priority given to Tribes of the Pacific Northwest.
