Today the Community Colleges of Spokane’s Board of Trustees selected Kevin Brockbank, Ed.D, to be its next Chancellor. Contractual terms were agreed upon and an initial contract is being drafted. He will begin leading the community college district May 1.
“He demonstrated his leadership and optimistic vision, grounded in a commitment to ensuring our community college district continues to be a leader across the nation,” said Mike Wilson, Chairman of the CCS Board of Trustees.
Wilson noted that selecting Brockbank meant that SCC will be in need of a new president. Typically the district would appoint an acting president until a full nationwide search can be completed.
Brockbank is the current president of Spokane Community College, a position he has held since 2017. Prior to that, he served as the Community Colleges of Spokane vice provost for strategic partnerships from 2015-2017. He was the dean of the School of Applied Technologies and Professional Development at Salt Lake Community College in Utah from 2013-2015 and interim associate dean and department chair of Industrial Technology at Missoula College University of Montana from 2011-2012. He was employed for 17 years at Helena College-University of Montana where he served as the Executive Director of Academic and Workforce Development, Department Chair of Industrial Trades and a tenured faculty member in Computer Technology and Office Technology.
“I am honored to be selected to lead the Community Colleges of Spokane,” Brockbank said. “I look forward to continuing CCS’s legacy of always putting students first and serving the educational needs of the entire community.”
Brockbank earned an Ed.D. in Educational Leadership, a masters in Curriculum Studies, and a bachelor’s degree in Business and Information Technology all from the University of Montana.
The annual salary for this position is $300,000.
The chancellor finalists included Nicole-Albo Lopez, Marty Cavalluzzi and Nicole Esposito. All four visited Spokane this month taking part in interviews and public forums. More information on all candidates is available on the CCS website.
The former chancellor, Christine Johnson, retired at the end of December after leading the community college district for 12 years. Longtime CCS executive Greg Stevens is serving as acting chancellor until the position is filled.
CCS is one of the largest education providers in Eastern Washington, serving approximately30,000 students a year at Spokane Falls Community College and Spokane Community College, over 30 Head Start and Early Head Start Centers, numerous Corporate and Continuing Education programs and programs for senior citizens.
Community Colleges of Spokane provides services throughout a 12,302 square mile region that includes all of Spokane, Stevens, Whitman, Ferry and Pend Oreille Counties, as well as portions of Lincoln County. Both colleges of CCS are accredited by the Northwest Commission on Colleges and Universities and governed by the Washington State Board of Community and Technical Colleges.
