Spokane Falls Community College sweeps regional drama awards

Spokane Falls Community College made a significant showing this year at the 2021 Broadway World regional drama awards, winning in every single possible category.

Regional productions, touring shows and more were all included in the awards— which had their first performance between Oct. 1, 2020, through Sept. 30, 2021. SFCC Drama took top honors across the board. The 2021 spring production of "Madagascar: A Musical Adventure" gathered up 5 awards along with Best Musical, and the Fall 2020 production of "Gary: A Sequel to Titus Andronicus" won for Best Play.

Spokane Falls Community College’s Drama department as a whole was nominated multiple times and won in every category for its musical theatre and theatre arts productions.

Broadway World Regional is a New York City-based theatre news website, and the regional awards are the largest theatre audience awards in the country, with over 100 cities participating worldwide.

“Our success this year as we won in every category is a testament to the fact that we kept creating theatre when so many other groups had to stop,” said SFCC Drama Advisor and Instructor Ashley DeMoville. “We created new genres in virtual theatre as we went and maintained our commitment to providing high-quality learning opportunities for our students. I am so proud of all the amazing work our faculty, staff, and students have done over the past year and am grateful to our community for the continued support.”

Founded in 2003, Broadway World is the largest theatre site on the internet covering Broadway, West End, more than 100 United States cities and 50 countries worldwide. With over 4.5 million monthly visitors, Broadway World delivers complete up-to-the-minute Broadway, off-Broadway and regional theatre news. They annually recognize Equity and non-Equity (union and non-union) regional productions, touring shows in more than 100 U.S. cities, Central and South America, Canada, Europe and Asia.

The Spartan Theatre and Bigfoot Drama Club at SFCC were nominated in the Washington Regional Awards, with their 2021 production being recognized as one of the best in the state for 2021. Other nominated companies included both professional and community theatres in Seattle and throughout Washington State.
