The SFCC Spartan Theatre and Digital Filmmaking Programs present the exciting streaming experience Alicia in Wonder Tierra (Or I Can’t Eat Goat Head) by Silvia Gonzalez S. This student-led film will be available on-demand from Friday, April 8 through Sunday, April 10.
Loosely based on Alice in Wonderland, with a touch of The Wizard of Oz, the film shares the whimsical tale of young Alicia’s amazing adventures on a journey from a Mexican curio shop to an understanding of her national heritage. After tripping over some Mexican pottery, Alicia whirls off on a mystical journey to the Aztec temple to find the Pottery Maker who knows what becomes of the souls which have become trapped in Mexican pottery. En route, she meets an armadillo, a Day of the Dead sugar skull, a cactus man, and the Tree of Heads.
This film is the product of an exciting new collaboration between the Drama, Digital Filmmaking, and Spanish programs. Instructor Ira Gardner is the Director of Photography and led his cinematography students through every step of this process, from camera operation to sound engineering. Drama Adjunct Instructor Chris Hansen facilitated the scenic and property design, while SFCC Director of Drama Ashley DeMoville served as director and executive producer. Spanish Language Adjunct Instructor Conrado Zepeda-Pallares also made numerous invaluable contributions.
In addition to starring in the film, he served as the Cultural Specialist and language instructor.
“There is no better way to learn a language than by placing it in the cultural and social context in which that language is performed,” says Zepeda-Pallares. “For this reason, the collaboration between programs such as Modern Languages, Drama and Filmography is of vital importance to our students. Increasingly, we are understanding in the academic world that the borders between disciplines should be bridges of dialogue and not insurmountable walls. Having had the opportunity to collaborate for our film was an enriching experience.”
