Hear from a national expert on Russia’s war on Ukraine when U.S. Institute for Peace Senior Program Officer Dr. Heather Ashby speaks in person at the Spokane Community Lair Student Center Sasquatch Conference Room at 8:30 a.m. Thursday, May 19, 2022.


About the program

The SCC Peace Institute podcast series on Peace Education continues Thursday in a dialogue with Dr. Ashby, who will talk about the current activities in Eastern Europe and the war in Ukraine. Dr. Ashby will be joined by SCC Professor Angela Davis Wizner and Eastern Washington University Professor Dr. Scott Finnie. Audience members are invited to join and watch the discussion live from 8:30 to 9:30 a.m., followed by 30 minutes to an hour of informal conversations. 

"With a sense of detachment that many SCC students feel, we are united with them,” said Professor Wizner. “Our goal is to look into this unanticipated tragedy with a sense of empathy and reflection." 

There is no registration. Seats are first come, first serve.


About Dr. Heather Ashby

Heather Ashby is the senior program officer for the Center for Russia and Europe at the U.S. Institute of Peace. Dr. Ashby joined USIP after seven years with the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), where she worked at the intersection of homeland security and international affairs. She also focused on U.S.-Russia relations at DHS.

Her research interests include Russia’s activities in the Global South, particularly in Africa. Dr. Ashby researches and publishes on Russia’s involvement in conflict zones and efforts to wield influence in the Global South through kinetic and non-kinetic means. She also supports USIP’s work on Ukraine and strategic competition.  

Dr. Ashby received her doctorate from the University of Southern California in 2014.
