45 RNs graduate from SCC summer quarter 2020

The Spokane Community College Nursing Class of Summer 2020 graduated on time and was about the same size as last summer’s class, despite spending their last two quarters studying during a worldwide pandemic.

“COVID-19 did not keep any of the nursing students from graduating,” said Cheri Osler, associate dean of Nursing at SCC. The only difference was that all the theory classes were moved online, she said, adding the SCC nursing faculty worked diligently to ensure the students had a quality and consistent learning experience.

“SCC was able to continue clinical placements, lab classes and theory classes,” Osler said. She expects that when the new RNs take the national licensure exam within the next two months the pass rate will be similar to the winter 2020 graduating cohort with a 98 percent pass rate. Also, 85 to 100 percent of SCC nursing graduates obtain an RN position within six months of graduation, Osler said.

The summer class did miss out on a group celebration and a group photo, but all their individual photos were put together in a collage and a digital copy given to them. The fall class will be starting Sept. 21 with a plan for all classes to be in-person, including the theory classes that were moved online.
