Community Colleges of Spokane is pleased to announce Governor Jay Inslee appointed Pullman Mayor Glenn Johnson to serve on its Board of Trustees.
Johnson is serving his fourth term as mayor of Pullman and is a well-respected community leader who is especially well known at the “Voice of the Cougs” – the public address announcer for WSU Cougar football and men’s basketball. He is a professor emeritus for WSU where he taught classes in television news, media management and public speaking.
“As a huge proponent of community colleges it will be an honor to serve as a trustee on the Community Colleges of Spokane board," Johnson said.
Johnson’s relationship with community colleges reaches back to his own education, when he earned an Associate of Arts degree from Modesto Junior College in California. He continued his education, eventually earning his Ph.D. in mass communications from the University of Iowa.
"I look back at my community college education and my AA degree as the foundation to whatever success I have found in life,” Johnson said. “I had great professors who sincerely cared about their students. I even kept in touch with several of those great teachers when I taught at WSU. Not only was I a recipient of a great education but I was able to give back by teaching one evening course every semester at Sacramento City College while I managed a couple of radio stations in Sacramento.”
Spokane Falls Community College’s campus in Pullman last year moved onto the campus of WSU to better serve its students. Johnson has been a supporter of SFCC’s growing role in Pullman and was a speaker at the grand opening celebration for the new site last fall.
His appointment will take effect immediately and will fill the position that was held for more than a decade by Trustee Greg Bever, whose term has expired. This spring there will be a celebration honoring Bever for his dedication and service. Bever, a past chairman of the Board of Trustees, has been recognized at the state and national level for his efforts on behalf of CCS.
“Community Colleges of Spokane takes pride in serving the Spokane community as well as in our six rural education centers across the region - including our growing Pullman campus,” said Chancellor Christine Johnson. “We are honored to welcome Glenn Johnson to our board and know he will bring his strong knowledge of education and his commitment to serving the region to this important position.”
